Have a look at our sanctuary

The sanctuary hosts around 200 dogs. The amount on average is always like that. Even though we try as hard as we can to keep the number low, abandonment and animal cruelty is this country is too high so many times it's hard to say no to some of the calls we receive.

Freddie's phone rings constantly day and evening. Some would want us to pick their pet because they do not want them anymore, another would say "I'm pregnant now and cannot keep the pets anymore". Others would report an abused animal or else, even worse a dog that was run over by a car. Every body knows, that if anyone hits an animal on the street it's the same as if you hit a brick! You hit the animal and you're free to keep on driving! It is so hard to refuse such calls. Such call outs will also cost us a lot of money. Operations are costly, aftercare needs a lot of time, patience and dedication, medical expenses after operations are not cheap either. But we would never let money get in the way to help such an animal.

We believe that a dog, who's been abandoned and is rescued to an animal shelter, should not be in a prison. Our dogs are let loose. They are out of their pens when Freddie arrives in the morning. They are let free to play and run until cleaning and feeding is done. In the afternoon, after they're tired, they are returned to their pens.

The dogs love us to bits, but mostly Freddie. One can hear a whole chaos of barking when Freddie comes in. All of them are asking for a hug from him. They need attention and love. A sanctuary is a good thing but not enough. It is still a far cry from a loving home. The dogs have to compete for attention and love. Even though we try our hardest to give them as much love as we can but it is virtually impossible to give them what a home gives to one or two individual dogs.

We constantly need help. Animal Sanctuaries in Malta get no funds from the government. There is so much work to be done here. The dogs are a handful. We pay 460 euros per month in rent for the sanctuary, which can host only around 100 dogs, but we are always over that amount! With all the calls we get it is very hard to keep the population low. We feel that if we do not rescue any dogs then we can close doors because we are here to help fight animal cruelty. We then need to buy food and most of all medications for the dogs. Many dogs we collect are ill, being the reason why many of them are abandoned. Rosalind, our nurse takes trips to the vet almost every day to keep them healthy. But this costs hundreds of money. Each and every dog that comes in is neutered, vaccined, blood tested and micro-chipped.

The sanctuary need to be refurbished frequently as well. Pens need to be re-done and the place needs to be maintained adequately for the dogs.

We ask anyone to become a helper. We always need helpers to give out a hand with the dogs. It is hard work but most rewarding! The little you give to the dogs they will give back in a million!
